  36. This software is available in two formats (disk images and
  37. "Net Install"):

  39. 1.  5 self-extracting archives of Disk Copy 1440K disk
  40. images.  To use, download, double-click the downloaded file
  41. (this decompresses it), and use Disk Copy to create the
  42. disks.  Disk Copy can be found in the Utilities folder
  43. posted here.

  45. 2.  A complete LaserWriter 8.4.1 "Net Install".  It includes
  46. all software from all 5 "LW 8.4.1" disk images. 
  47. This posting is provided as a convenience for those
  48. customers who:
  49. - want to download just one file.
  50. - want a pre-configured "Net Install" to place on their hard
  51. drive or on a server.

  56. already downloaded the 5 separate disk images of
  57. "LW 8.4.1".

  60. Due to licensing restrictions, this disk set does not
  61. contain fonts.

  65. LaserWriter 8.4.1 provides improved functions and
  66. application compatibility.

  68. In LaserWriter 8.4 Get Printer Info or Change Setup can not
  69. be used when Connectix' Speed Doubler is also in the
  70. Extensions folder. LaserWriter 8.4.1 corrects this conflict
  71. with Speed Doubler.

  73. Desktop printer icons display the icon of the printer
  74. selected, unless the PostScript Printer Description file for
  75. the printer selected is not installed in your Printer
  76. Descriptions folder. In this case, the desktop printer icon
  77. displays the icon for LaserWriter 8.

  80. read this file before installing this software.

  82. Before You Install
  83.  
  84. This document contains some important reminders and some
  85. information about installing the software. You may want to
  86. print this document and keep it for future reference.
  87.  
  88. Installing the Printer Driver Software
  89.  
  90. You cannot install the software by dragging the icons to
  91. your hard disk; you must use the Installer program. Your Mac
  92. OS≠based computer must have System 7.1 or later. In
  93. addition, your Mac OS≠based computer should have a minimum
  94. of 8 megabytes (MB) of memory.The printer software does not
  95. include a QuickDraw GX driver.
  96.  
  97. IMPORTANT If you are installing from floppy disks, before
  98. installing the printer software, restart your system with
  99. all extensions turned off. To do this, hold down the Shift
  100. key while you restart your computer. Hold the Shift key down
  101. until you see the message ≥Extensions off≤ or until your
  102. normal desktop appears. If you are installing from a CD-ROM,
  103. you may want to turn off or remove individual extensions
  104. which may conflict with the Installer.

  106. The Installer does not remove versions of the LaserWriter
  107. printer driver earlier than version 8.0. If you no longer
  108. need these files, you may remove them from your System
  109. Folder.
  110.  
  111. The Installer does remove earlier versions of the
  112. LaserWriter 8 driver (for example, LaserWriter 8.0) and
  113. replaces the PPD files for Apple LaserWriter printers with
  114. the latest versions. You may want to archive your current
  115. LaserWriter 8 driver and PPDs before installing this
  116. software. To do this, drag the LaserWriter 8 file from the
  117. Extensions folder (located in your active System Folder) to
  118. another folder. Drag your current PPDπs from the Printer
  119. Descriptions folder (located in the Extensions folder) to
  120. another folder.

  122. When you choose Easy Install, the Installer places the
  123. following files on your hard disk:
  124. Ä  LaserWriter 8.4.1 is placed in the Extensions folder
  125. inside the System Folder.
  126. Ä  PrintingLib is placed in the Extensions folder. 
  127. Ä The PPD files used by LaserWriter 8 are placed in the
  128. Printer Descriptions folder inside the Extensions folder. 
  129. Ä The Apple Printer Utility, SimpleText, and Read Me files
  130. are placed in the Apple LaserWriter Software folder.
  131. Ä For desktop printing, Desktop PrintMonitor, Desktop
  132. Printer Spooler, Desktop Printer Extension, Clipping
  133. Extension, and Network Extension are placed in the
  134. Extensions folder. If you have System 7.5 and a Control
  135. Strips folder, Printer Selector control strip is also
  136. installed in the Control Strip Modules folder.
  137. Ä ColorSync 2.0.1 is placed in the Extensions folder. The
  138. ColorSync profiles are placed in the ColorSync Profiles
  139. folder (in the Preferences folder inside the System Folder).
  140. The ColorSync System Profile control panel is placed in the
  141. Control Panels folder. 
  142. Ä If your system has System 7.1, 7.1.1, 7.1.2, or 7.5, 
  143. Finder 7.5.1 is placed in your System Folder, and Finder
  144. Help 7.1.5 is placed in the Extensions folder.
  145. Ä  If your system has System 7.1, 7.1.1 or 7.1.2,  these
  146. files are placed in the Extensions folder: Thread Manager
  147. 2.1 and Macintosh Drag and Drop 1.1.
  148. Ä  If your system has System 7.1, Dragging Enabler is placed
  149. in the Extensions folder.
  150. Ä  If you have a 68K-based Mac OS≠based computer, Code
  151. Fragment Manager files for the 68K are also placed in your
  152. Extensions folder in the active System Folder: CFM-68K
  153. Runtime Enabler, NuQuickTime.slb, NuThreadsLib.slb, and
  154. ColorSyncLib68K.
  155.  
  156. IMPORTANT If the Installer is unable to remove old files
  157. from your hard disk, it will terminate the installation
  158. procedure. If this happens, remove old copies of the files
  159. listed above from their respective folders and try the
  160. install again.
  161.  
  162. Finder Help required - If the Mac OS computer is running
  163. System 7.5.1 or greater, the installer requires Finder Help
  164. to be present in the Extensions folder before it will
  165. install the software.  All earlier Systems will be updated
  166. to Finder Help 7.1.5.  If the Finder Help file was removed
  167. from the Extensions folder, the installer displays a message
  168. that Finder Help is missing.  Put a copy of the Finder Help
  169. that came with the latest System Software into the
  170. Extensions folder before running the installer.

  172. Printer Descriptions Folder Alias - If the Printer
  173. Descriptions folder has been moved to somewhere other than
  174. the Extensions folder, and an alias to it is in its place,
  175. be sure to remove the Printer Descriptions alias before
  176. running the Installer.

  178. Custom Install Checkboxes - Custom Install checkbox options
  179. may get modified by the Installer if you use the Switch Disk
  180. button to change to a volume that has a different active
  181. operating system on it. Be sure to reselect the Custom
  182. Install options to install the appropriate software for the
  183. active operating system on the new volume.
